Neonatal Septicemia and Meningitis due to Nontyphoidal Salmonella: A Case Report

چکیده
Invasion of the central nervous system is a severe and frequently fatal event during the course of many infectious diseases and those who survive are often left with permanent neurological dysfunction. Non typhoidal Salmonella commonly cause invasive bacterial infections in children associated with high mortality. A 20 day old female child was admitted to neonatal intensive care unit with the symptoms suggestive of septicemia and meningitis. Blood and CSF samples were submitted for biochemical and microbial analysis. Salmonella enterica serotype typhimurium was isolated from both blood and CSF of the neonate. The child recovered well with Ceftrioxone and Amikacin and discharged after 3 weeks with mild hydrocephalus. © 2014 Universal Research Publications. All rights reserved

BACKGROUND Clinicians at Haydom Lutheran Hospital, a rural hospital in northern Tanzania noted an unusually high case-fatality rate of pediatric meningitis and suspected an outbreak of an unknown agent or an organism resistant to the empirical therapy. METHODS We established a provisional microbiology laboratory to investigate the suspected outbreak. Blood and spinal fluid specimens were take...

Abstract Introduction Salmonellosis is an important public health problem throughout the world. Salmonella meningitis is an unusual manifestation of salmonellosis and remains a threat to children below 2 years of age. Young children especially infants and immunocompromised adults are particularly at higher risk of acquiring this bacteria. The disease has a poor prognosis and is associated with ...
متن کاملSalmonella enterica Serotype Arizonae Meningitis in a Neonate
Typhoidal and nontyphoidal salmonella infections are common causes of gastroenteritis in the community. However, salmonella only rarely causes invasive infections like meningitis. We report a 13-day-old female neonate with signs and symptoms of meningitis whose cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture showed Salmonella enterica serotype Arizonae that was sensitive to ceftriaxone. She presented with fe...
متن کاملMaternal and Neonatal Infection With Salmonella heidelberg : A Case Report
Maternal and neonatal infections with Salmonella typhi have been well documented. There are only two previous case reports of intrauterine infection with non-typhoidal species. This paper presents a third case of maternal septicemia followed by neonatal sepsis with Salmonella heidelberg.

The study included 172 patients, aged 0-15 years, for whom at least 1 nonfecal, nonurinary specimen was culture-positive for nontyphoidal Salmonella. Ninety-five percent had positive blood cultures. Immunocompromising diseases were found in 19% of 74 infants and 77% of 98 children. Associations between the study factors and outcomes, as localized infection or death, were assessed by logistic re...
